Camilo Astiazarán is a guitarist and composer born in 1998 in Montevideo, Uruguay. His musical studies began when he was 5 years old, studying piano and drums at TUMP. At the age of 8 he decided to start studying guitar with private teachers.

He has studied with Uruguayan music figures such as Eduardo Mauris, Alejandro Luzardo, Martin Ibarra and Nacho González.

He studied composition and improvisation in New York with pianists Shai Maestro and Nitai Hershkovitz. He also took courses with Brazilian guitarist Daniel Santiago.

AFRO URUGUAYAN MUSIC

His musical influences are strongly marked by candombe (Afro-Uruguayan music), jazz and classical music.

From an early age he worked with relevant Candombe figures such as Chabela Ramirez, Eduardo Da Luz and Alejandro Luzardo, allowing him to gain a lot of experience playing live in various shows and festivals.

In 2019 he recorded his first album “Origenes” an instrumental album, made up of 4 compositions, mostly played only with a guitar. He presented these compositions in renowned theaters in Uruguay, at the same time that they began to broadcast his music on the main instrumental music radio station in Uruguay (Babel). The release of this album made different established artists of jazz and Uruguayan popular music take an interest in him, and invited him to participate in shows and recordings. He collaborated with musicians like Gustavo Ripa, Gabriel Estrada, Smurf Lombardo, Popo Romano, among others.

GIFTED TUITION SCHOLARSHIP WINNER

The Latin Grammy Cultural Foundation annually awards 3 outstanding music students from around the world to develop their careers at the institution of their choice. One of those lucky talents this year is Camilo Astiazarán, a 25-year-old musician-composer born in Montevideo, Uruguay who was awarded the “Talent Scholarship for Tuition”, the first Uruguayan to receive such a distinction.
